Group 03 · Tyres, tubes, valves, rim tape

Tyres picked by the ISO number on the sidewall, tubes picked by how deep your rim is.

Road and city tyres from 700x25c to 700x40c, including the 700x28c road tires most people ask for, plus 20 to 24 in kids' sizes. Presta inner tubes for 700c rims in 48, 60 and 80 mm valve lengths, and Schrader tubes for rims drilled for them. Shipped across the United States from our desk in Austin.

Item 01

Road and city tyres, 700x25c to 700x40c

Most road frames built in the last eight years clear a 28 mm tyre, and that is the size we send most often. 700x28c road tires ride softer than 25s at the same speed and they still fit standard rim brake calipers on a lot of bikes. City bikes go wider, 32 to 40 mm, usually with a wire bead and a puncture belt because nobody wants to fix a flat on Lamar at 8 a.m.

Folding bead tyres are lighter and pack small. Wire bead tyres cost less and go on cheaper rims more easily. Kids' sizes run 20 to 24 in, and those are always matched by ISO number. A 20 in tyre can be 406 or 451. They do not swap.

Folded inner tubes with Presta and Schrader valves of different lengths

Item 02

Presta inner tubes for 700c, Schrader tubes, valves and rim tape

A tube has three numbers that matter. The ISO bead seat, which must match the tyre exactly. The width range, which must cover the tyre width: a 700x18–25 tube in a 32 mm tyre is stretched thin and goes flat early. And the valve length, which depends on how deep the rim is. Get the first two right and the third wrong, and you have a tube you cannot pump up.

We send butyl tubes as standard. Removable valve cores on the Presta tubes, so you can fit an extender later. Rim tape goes by the inner width of the rim; send it, or a photo with a tape measure across the rim bed, and we will match it. Cloth tape for city and kids' rims, high-pressure tape for road.

Valve length versus rim depth

Measure the rim, then pick the valve

Put a ruler on the rim from the brake track edge down to the spoke bed. That is the depth. A pump head needs at least 15 mm of threaded valve standing clear of the rim to grip properly.

Depths are measured from the bead hook or brake track to the spoke bed. If your rim sits on a boundary, we send the longer valve.

Pressure range. Use the lower of two limits: the range printed on the tyre sidewall and the maximum for the rim. Most hookless rims cap at 72.5 psi (5 bar), which rules out some narrow road tyres entirely. A 700x28c tyre under a rider around 165 to 185 lb usually sits between 60 and 80 psi. Kids' 20 in tyres are often printed 40 to 65 psi; most kids run them too soft and pinch the tube on the first curb.

Frame clearance. Width on the box is a nominal figure. The same 28 mm tyre measures 29 to 31 mm on a wide modern rim. We want about 4 mm of air each side at the chainstays and under the fork crown. Send a photo of the tightest point with the current tyre fitted.

From sidewall to dispatch

What happens after you send the sizes

  1. Read the sidewall

Find the ISO pair, written like 28-622 or 47-406. The first number is width, the second is bead seat. Photograph it if the moulding is worn. That one photo settles most kids' tyre questions on its own.

  2. Measure the rim and look at the valve hole

Rim depth in mm, and whether the hole is the narrow Presta size or the wider Schrader one. Inner rim width too, if you want rim tape.

  3. Send the inquiry

Use the contact form or call +1 (565) 555-2353. Add the clearance photo if you are going wider.

  4. We check and reply within one business day, Mon to Fri

The reply lists each tyre and tube with the checks we ran next to it: ISO size, width range, valve length, bead type. Each line carries an indicative price and the total is held for seven days.

  5. You confirm, we bag and tag it

Tubes go out folded in their own bags with the valve length written on the tag. Tyres ship folded or, for wire bead, coiled.

Before you ask

Tyre and tube questions we answer every week

My kid's bike says 20 inch. Is that enough to order a tyre?

No. Most kids' bikes sold as 20 inch roll on ISO 406. A few run 451, usually the ones with narrow road-style rims. Read the sidewall. The small number is the one that matters. We will not ship a 20 in tyre without it, because the wrong one simply will not seat. For the wheels themselves, see wheels, hubs and spokes, and for the rest of a small bike, kids' bike parts by wheel size, 16 inch included.

Can I go from 25 mm to 32 mm on my road bike?

Possibly. Older rim brake road frames often stop at 28. Rim brake calipers have their own limit, and the tyre has to pass between the pads with the quick release open. Send the clearance photo and the caliper model. If it will not fit, we say so and suggest the widest size that will.

Presta or Schrader for my rim?

Whatever the rim is drilled for. A Presta tube in a Schrader hole rocks and tears at the base unless you fit a grommet, which we can include. A Schrader tube will not pass a Presta hole. We do not advise drilling out a rim; on narrow alloy rims it weakens the wall.

Do you sell mountain bike tyres?

No. The catalogue covers road, city and kids' bikes. If your city bike runs 26 in (ISO 559) slick tyres, we can help with those. Knobbly trail tyres are a different trade and we leave them to people who ride them every week.

Is the price on this page what I pay?

No. Prices on this site are indicative. The number in our reply is the one we will hold for seven days. There is no cart and no checkout here; nothing is charged until you confirm the reply.
